Wrestling began at Iowa State College (Iowa State University) under coach Charles Mayser (1916). Iowa State shared its first NCAA team title with Oklahoma A&M in 1933, though the NCAA title would not become "official" on a permanent basis until 1934. On March 22, 1948, Iowa State College (University) sponsored a 90th anniversary celebration in honor of the founding of the college, which occurred on the same date in 1858 when the charter act establishing a state agricultural college became law.
